Finding Sobriety and Happiness at Drug Rehab Clinic

February 01 04:11 2021

In the most recent study on Canadian drug use statistics, just over 20% of the population met the requirements to qualify for a substance abuse problem. With a population of 37.59 million people, that is almost eight million citizens suffering from some form of chemical addiction. These numbers show that many people around the country cope with some form of chemical, whether it is socially acceptable such as alcohol, or not, such as many common street drugs. While chemicals can be in the form of medication prescribed by doctors, chemicals that people abuse are typically not, or in some cases exceed the recommended dosage. Some people can quit on their own, some have no desire to quit, and some people need help to quit. Drug rehab clinics play a very important role in the last example and are a beacon of hope to many of those citizens that feel like they have become enslaved by their addiction.

The idea that chemical addiction only harms the user is very far off from the truth. Those that are suffering from addiction can potentially hurt many people around them through reckless driving, impaired behaviour, unnecessary risks, stealing to feed the addiction, and an entire spectrum of emotional pain that can be a burden on family and friends. Often these addictions lead to increased hospital stays, emergency support, and other taxpayer funded programs, and if the choice is to continue using, eventually they can become inmates or worse. With the negatives of chemical addiction far outweighing the positives, it is no wonder that many people choose to live a sober life, or to become sober. While overcoming chemical addiction is not easy, the chances of success can be greatly improved by the offerings of a good drug rehab clinic.

A good drug rehab clinic can be a literal life saver, offering many services such as counselling, detox programs, group therapy, and medical intervention. For some a standard detox is necessary, where the patient will undergo essentially a “cold-turkey” detoxification process to sort of shock their body into releasing it’s dependence on foreign chemicals to feel “normal”. There is also the medical detox which is required for certain harder drugs and some cases of severe alcohol dependence. Medical detox can involve slowly tapering the body off chemicals it’s used to, as the sudden “cold-turkey” method can have serious effects such as seizures. Medical detox is a service performed by medical professionals that often has a higher success rate for certain chemicals than quitting suddenly. Medical detox can also utilize drugs that provide a similar effect with a much less chance of addiction, so the body is able to be adjusted back to normal over time with less withdrawal effects.

Drug rehab clinics also offer social services such as counselling and group therapy, and some even assist with securing government assistance. Those with a stable home and job, who have access to counselling services, are much more likely to be successful in kicking their chemically dependent habits. Counselling is a very important piece of the puzzle when it comes to chemical dependency. The question of “Why use chemicals?” is just as important as the fact that chemicals are being used. Some people use chemicals to escape, some to have fun, and some to feel normal. Many people around the country suffer, and many choose to use substances to get by. It is an unfortunate reality, but the idea of an easy escape is tantalizing to many people. Often, people do not start out and plan to be addicted to chemicals, but it is a potential outcome of these situations. Counselling is a way of digging down deep into these issues and understanding why people feel the need to escape, or to feel “normal”. A competent counsellor or therapist can pinpoint reasons for these, such as undiagnosed chronic pain, depression, anxiety, or other mental disorders. Group therapy works in much the same manner, providing support and a close group of confidantes that can relate to what the patient is going through. This allows people to be open and honest around people who understand them and gives them the security to speak and be heard. Counselling and group therapy can work wonders alongside traditional/medical detoxification.

Finally, many of these clinics will also either have doctors onsite or can recommend patients to competent doctors to check in on their mental and physical well-being, as well as provide referrals to therapists and counsellors. In instances where the underlying cause of chemical addiction is an undiagnosed mental or physical disorder, many people benefit from medication to help cope with those issues that led to the chemical dependency in the first place. Drug rehab clinics play a very important role in the general safety and well-being of the Canadian population, and everyone should feel comfortable approaching a therapist, counsellor, or doctor to get the help they need, to live the best life that they can.
